Unforgettable Wildlife and Remote Waters

The Arctic Cowboys had an exhilarating day paddling 45.5 miles through the Arctic waters, easily escaping the icy grasp. The real highlight, however, was their continued extraordinary encounters with the enigmatic Narwhals. These majestic creatures surrounded their campsite, leaving the team in awe of their uniqueness. The experience made them cherish every moment, knowing they might not have another chance to witness these incredible animals. The Arctic Cowboys were also joined by the ever-present seals, adding to the wilderness charm. Polar Bears have remained out of sight since their time at Buff Head.

They paddled a nice 45.5 miles today.  It took them only a few minutes to get away from the ice, a light wind, and a few waves. The afternoon provided a great paddling day.  After 45.5 miles the 2 “young kids,” Eileen and Mark, were still having a great time and ready to go farther while the Masters (or old guys West and Jeff) were prepared to call it a day.

Tomorrow poses a new challenge as they consider crossing over to Somerset Island, braving the ice build-up pushed in by the north winds, making the 45-mile crossing a daring task. While the water and weather are great on “this” side of Brodeur Peninsula, crossing over to Somerset Island will be a challenge. Winds have pushed enormous pieces of sheets of ice into Prince Regent Inlet from the north. Once a landing zone has been selected on Somerset Island, the team will seize the opportunity to cross the 45-mile waterway. Barbara and Tom will be up early, closely monitoring ice and weather reports to make an informed decision.

Amidst their thrilling expedition, Eileen’s water sample collection remains ongoing, supporting Narwhal tusk research in collaboration with Martin Nweeia. This incredible opportunity to gather crucial samples adds a scientific touch to their adventurous journey.
