Encounters in the Arctic: Looner Landing Expedition

The Arctic Cowboys’ kayak expedition through the Northwest Passage continues to unveil remarkable encounters and challenges. Looner Landing Camp, named for the loons that greeted them, welcomed the team with its serene beauty. The loons were a sight to behold. They were so “cool.” Amidst this peaceful scene, the team was also graced by the presence of their first Caribou! A solitary figure wandering the shoreline, the Caribou seemed unaffected by the team’s presence, locked in a tranquil stare-off. He then leisurely went on his way.

Today, the Arctic Cowboys covered an impressive 30 miles on calm waters, allowing them to make swift progress compared to their usual pace. West, one of the team members, relished the opportunity for a few exhilarating sprints. While enjoying the tranquil weather for now, the team anticipates potential interruptions in the coming days, making the most of the serene conditions while they last.

The plan remains unchanged: paddle consistently, covering no less than 30 miles per day. These extended paddling sessions not only provide a physical challenge but also offer a unique vantage point to witness the changing Arctic landscape and its wildlife.
