Cambridge Bound: A Month on the Water

The Northwest Passage Expedition team finds themselves in a meteorological “sweet spot,” shielded from powerful winds that have been swirling at speeds of over 50 miles per hour in a large circle. This temporary calm has allowed them a few days of steady paddling, covering an additional 34 miles today. To everyone’s surprise, the paddling was very uneventful. The waters were surprisingly calm, defying the forecasted rain. Even a brief encounter with fog didn’t deter them, and they were treated to the sight of playful seals and a Polar Corgi enjoying the water. It had been a while since they had seen any seals.

As they near Cambridge Bay, the team anticipates a well-deserved rest. They’ll savor nights in proper beds, relish “real” meals, and attend to boat repairs before tackling the second half of their expedition. It’s been a month since their journey began at Cape Liverpool, enduring challenges from ice, wind rain, and very adverse weather.

The team officially started the Northwest Passage Expedition on July 18, 2023.  Today is one month since they left Cape Liverpool, on north Bylot Island.

With their sights set on smoother sailing ahead, the team looks forward to clearer skies, serene seas, and a more favorable second leg of their journey through the Northwest Passage.
